Fostering agency transfers – your questions answered
We know it can feel unfamiliar, so we’ve answered some common questions below. If you need more information, our team at Sunbeam Fostering North West is here to help every step of the way.
Do I need another fostering assessment or new assessment?
Yes, a new assessment is required as you are formally applying to join Sunbeam Fostering North West. However, the process is typically quicker than your original application. If you are able to share your existing Form F assessment from your current agency, we can review it with you and determine whether it can be updated or if a new assessment is needed. This will depend on your current approval terms and the date your Form F was originally completed.
You will be allocated a skilled and experienced assessor who will guide you through the process. All necessary checks and references will be completed again to ensure everything is up to date. As with your initial application, you will also be required to attend a fostering panel.
What is time involved to transfer? How long does it take?
On average, the transfer process takes between three to six months from the date of your application. However, it can often be completed more quickly, particularly if you are fast-tracked by our recruitment team. Providing your existing Form F assessment can also help to speed up the process.
While we aim to make your transfer as efficient as possible, we do not compromise on the quality or thoroughness of your assessment, checks, or the overall application process. At Sunbeam Fostering North West, we adhere to robust safer recruitment procedures to ensure all fostering regulations are fully met.
Can I transfer if I have a current placement and I am supported by another independent fostering agency?
Yes, this can happen. Of course, the needs and support of the child and young person are most important. There would be a transfer protocol meeting to cover this with your existing agency, Sunbeam Fostering North West, and the placing Local Authority. The impact of any move on the child and young person is most important, as is ensuring stability for the child or young person.
Can I transfer from a Local Authority to an Independent Fostering Agency?
Yes, it is possible to transfer from a Local Authority to an Independent Fostering Agency. The process involves submitting an application and undergoing the standard assessment procedure, similar to when you initially became a foster carer.
If you currently have a child placed with you by the Local Authority, their welfare remains the top priority. In such cases, a transfer protocol meeting will be arranged and must be completed to ensure a smooth and appropriate transition in line with safeguarding and placement continuity guidelines.
Will I receive training if I transfer to a new fostering agency?
Yes, you will receive full support and relevant training when you transfer to Sunbeam Fostering North West. This includes core courses such as Skills to Foster and ARC, along with access to a comprehensive training and development programme tailored to your individual needs.
Each foster carer is provided with a personalised training and development plan. We will take the time to review your previous experience, existing skills, and any specific areas you would like to develop further.
Your previous training history will be taken into consideration, and any gaps can be addressed through additional or enhanced training. We are committed to supporting your continued growth and ensuring you feel confident and well-equipped in your role.
How do I transfer to a new fostering agency?
The transfer process begins with your initial enquiry. A member of the recruitment team at Sunbeam Fostering North West will arrange a home visit to discuss your interest in transferring and to provide more information.
Following this, you will be asked to complete an application form so that we can begin the necessary background checks and references. Your assessment will be carried out alongside this process, taking into account your experience and current fostering situation.
If you currently have a child in placement, careful planning will take place to ensure continuity of care and the child’s welfare remains the highest priority. When the time is right, you will be supported in giving notice to your current fostering agency.
Sunbeam Fostering North West supports you with every step when transferring to help the process go smoothly.
