What is the difference between fostering with an Independent Fostering Agency and a Local Authority?
Local Authorities are responsible for the wellbeing and safeguarding of all children in their care. They assess each child’s needs and decide the best placement to ensure they receive the highest standard of care.
Sunbeam Fostering Northwest is an Independent Fostering Agency that works alongside Local Authorities. We recruit and support our own foster carers, social workers, and staff, ensuring that both carers and children receive high quality support without delay.
I’m not married – does this matter?
No, it doesn’t. Any adult can apply to be a foster carer, as long as they meet the fostering criteria, including having a spare room. What matters most is your emotional resilience, empathy, ability to nurture a child or young person, and willingness to work with professionals.
Can I still go out to work and be a foster carer?
Many foster carers foster full time, while others work part time. At Sunbeam Fostering Northwest, we believe high quality care is best achieved when one carer is available at home full time. Foster carers are responsible for school runs and being present when children are home.
Do I have to own my home?
No. You can foster whether you own your home or rent. If renting, you’ll just need consent from your landlord or letting agent.
How long does it take to become a foster carer?
We process applications as efficiently as possible. It usually takes around four to six months to complete the full assessment.
If I have a criminal conviction, does this mean I won’t be able to foster?
Not necessarily. It depends on the nature of the conviction. You must declare it during the application process so we can discuss it with you openly and appropriately.
If I’m going to be the main foster carer, do you need to carry out checks on my partner?
Yes. Even if you are the primary carer, anyone living in your household will need to undergo checks and training, as they will be involved in the fostering environment and influence the child’s daily life.
What will I know about the child or young person before they are placed with me?
We share all available information before placement. Sometimes, a child comes into care with very limited details. In those cases, the professional team gathers information quickly after placement, and we provide additional support to help manage any risks and understand the child’s needs.
Who is responsible for taking the child to school, the doctor, and other appointments?
Foster carers are expected to handle school runs and take children to necessary appointments, especially in the early stages. These may include GP, dental, or optician appointments.If this is difficult, speak to your supervising social worker, we will support you in planning alternative arrangements where appropriate. Some children may be able to travel safely to school by bus, but safety and safeguarding must always come first.
How much is the fostering allowance?
Sunbeam Fostering Northwest offers up to £750 per week per child, depending on the child’s needs.This payment includes both the allowance for the child and the foster carer’s fee. Payments are made only while a child is placed with you.
